US-led airstrikes halt IS advance in Kobane

Persistent air strikes conducted by the United States against the Islamic State (IS) near the Syrian town of Kobane has caused the group to retreat towards the edge of the town, a report said.

A senior officer confirmed that the group has been pushed as a result of the strikes and the ground operations by Kurdish forces, reported the BBC.

The progress comes a day after the U.S. warned that air strikes alone will not save Kobane from falling into the hands of the IS.

If the group captures Kobane, it would gain a complete control over a stretch of more than 100 kilometers between Raqqa, Syria and Turkey.

Three weeks of fighting in the city that is located on the Syrian-Turkish border has claimed 400 lives and compelled more than 160,000 Syrians to seek refuge in Turkey.
