The United States-led coalition taking on the Islamic State (IS) in Iraq has vowed to send an additional 1,500 troops, a top U.S. commander said.

Lieutenant General James Terry, who is coordinating attempts to fight the IS, said that the additional troops would be sent in addition to the 3,100 soldiers already promised, reported the BBC.

However, he did not mention which coalition countries would send the extra troops or what role they would play. The coalition members made the pledge to send in extra forces at a security conference in the region last week, he said.

The U.S. has agreed to send troops to Iraq in an advisory role.
