United States authorities probing the suspicious packages believed that the packages went through the processing and distribution center in Opa-Locka, Florida.

CNN reported that the packages went through a mailing facility while citing two law enforcement officials familiar with the investigation.

The mailing facility deals with the mails incoming and outgoing from south Florida, according to a US Postal Service employee.

However, the investigators are also looking into the fact that none of these packages containing explosives went off.

Federal Bureau of Investigation Assistant Director William Sweeney, who addressed a press conference, did not comment on the origin of these packages even when a few officials believe them to have originated in Florida.

He said that "disclose information that could adversely impact our investigation or a future prosecution."

While addressing the conference, New York City Police Commissioner James P. O'Neill assured New Yorkers of their safety.

"New Yorkers are safe, but everyone, all 8.6 million residents and the millions of visitors who come here every year should always remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings," he said.

O'Neill further said that people involved in the crime will be identified and arrested.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio appreciated the strength of the citizens and the spirit of the city. He further thanked the federal authorities and NYPD, who are currently investigating the case.

Terming the incident as "the definition of terrorism", Blasio condemned the criminal act of sending the suspicious packages.

"The people of this city are not being thrown off their game, are not having their values undermined or their way of life undermined. New Yorkers are standing strong right now," he said.

Several packages were delivered to the country's leaders and influential people including former US President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and the CNN office in New York.

Packages addressed to former Vice President Joe Biden and actor Robert de Niro were also intercepted on Thursday by the postal facilities.
