Former NSA contractor Edward Snowden has reportedly said that the US government wants to assassinate him for leaking the classified data about the alleged mass surveillance operations.

In his interview with German's public broadcaster ARD, Snowden said that there were significant threats to his life but he still sleeps well because he believes he did the right thing by informing the public about the NSA's snoop-ops.

According to Newsmax, the 30-year-old whistleblower said that the US government officials would love to put a bullet in his head or poison him when he comes out of the supermarket and then watch him die in the shower.

The revelations indicated that German chancellor Angela Merkel's mobile phone had been snooped on by the US since 2009; however, Snowden said it was likely that other leaders from Germany were monitored similarly.

Snowden has been charged with espionage by the US for leaking the nation's classified surveillance programme and is currently under temporary asylum in Russia.

Since he believes that he has low chances of having a fair trial in the US, Snowden has no plans to return back home without assurances that he would be provided amnesty.
