A woman from New York has cooked a pizza with cicada as a topping.
Caroline Fincke, whose family runs the Montgomery Place Orchard in Red Hook, New York, told the Poughkeepsie Journal that she searched the net for recipes after she heard that the noisy fliers could be cooked.
She said that pretty much anything where a shrimp can be used cicadas can also be used.
Fincke decided to take advantage of the abundance of cicadas that have returned from their hibernation to the East Coast for the first time in 17 years this summer, and incorporated the bugs into pizza loaded with spring greens.
Fincke added some olive oil, sea salt, pepper and ricotta cheese to crust that she bought from a store, and steamed ramps (wild leeks) and nettle for the dish, the New York Daily News reported.
Then she fried cicadas in butter with garlic, salt and red pepper and put the pizza in the oven for 8 to 10 minutes.
