The United States of America (USA) and Portugal second match in Group G ended in a 2-2 draw with winger Silvestre Varela netting the ball in the extra time to keep coach Paulo Bento's men in the World Cup.

USA captain and forward Clint Dempsey netted a goal in the 81st minute looked to have sent Jurgen Klinsmann's men through, but Varela's extra time equaliser helped Portugal keep their World Cup hopes alive.

According to The Mirror, if Portugal had lost the match, they would have crashed out of the World Cup.

Bento's men took the lead in the fifth minute of the match, thanks to Nani's goal, but the USA hit back with midfielder Jermaine Jones scoring in the 64th minute as Klinsmann's squad looked for a win to advance to the knockout stages.

USA got the lead just a few minutes into the match, but Varela's late equaliser kept Portugal in the run for the knockout stage of the World Cup, the report added.
