Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna on Saturday announced adequate compensation would be provided to kin of missing victims irrespective of whether they are dead or alive.

"See, I have told earlier also that in order to give compensation, we will consider the missing as dead because they are missing for a month, so we presume that they are not alive. The families would be recipients of the compensation. They might be alive, but we would give compensation," he said.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is sending a team to Uttarakhand next week to assess the relief and rehabilitation work being undertaken there following the devastating floods.

The five-member team, which would be headed by Director General (Investigation) Kanwaljit Deol, will visit the flood-ravaged state between July 15 to 18 for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation.

The team, which would be holding a meeting with senior state government officials, will also hold meetings with the NGOs and visit the worst-affected areas.

The NHRC team would make assessment of various aspects including the number of deaths, relief camps, accessibility of food and drinking water, alternate arrangements for rehabilitation of affected people, assistance to farmers, medical facilities, provisions for the last rites of the dead, safety and security of the people, restoration of infrastructure, disaster management system, monetary relief, etc.
