Vandals have damaged Anish Kapoor's controversial sculpture Dirty Corner, installed in the gardens of the Palace of Versailles in Paris, splattering the inside of the artwork with yellow paint.
Kapoor spoke of his "sadness" at the "malaise in France," which produced what is assumed to be a political attack on his work, the Independent reported.
Although the Palace of Versailles announced that the 30 feet high statue would be cleaned in situ, Kapoor said that it might have to be dismantled, adding that the attack revealed certain intolerance for art on the right wing of French politics.
He noted that it is the work of a small fraction of people, for whom any creative act threatens a sacred past, which is a sad nuisance.
