Veteran Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is reportedly set to leave the Old Trafford side, which will end a 12-year stay, in the summer after he was refused a new contract at the club.
Ferdinand, who has made 454 appearances and scored eight goals for the club, helped United win six league titles, two League Cups, one Champions League and a Club World Cup.
According to the BBC, Ferdinand, who made his final appearance for United in the 1-1 draw at Southampton in the final game of the season on Sunday, said in an open letter that he has thought long and hard over the last few months about his future.
Although Ferdinand rued the circumstances which did not allow him to say goodbye that way he would have liked, however, he thanked his teammates, the club and their fans for an 'unbelievable 12 years' which brought alive his childhood dreams of winning trophies.
Ferdinand also said that he is feeling fit and healthy, ready for a new challenge and looking forward to whatever the future holds for him.
Confirming the news, the club tweeted their thanks to Ferdinand, who made his United debut against Hungarian side Zalaegerszeg in a Champions League tie in 2002, for his 'long and distinguished service', and wished him well for the future.
Ferdinand, who captained Manchester United to the 2008 Champions League title, was banned for eight months after being found guilty of missing a drugs test in September 2003, the report added.
