Legendary Tamil actor S.S. Rajendran, who was battling for life at a private hospital in Chennai, breathed his last on Friday.

The 86-year-old actor, also known as SSR, was admitted to Meenakshi Hospital at Mylapore on October 23, following a lung infection.

Best known for his clear diction and immaculate dialogue delivery, SSR acted in films such as 'Parasakthi', 'Poompuhar', 'Marakka Mudiuma,' 'Kumudam' and 'Naanum Oru Penn'.

Condoling his death, G K Vasan, former Shipping Minister and present Rajyasabha MP of Tamil Nadu (Congress), said, "Our veteran actor who acted in more than 100 movies has been in the field of drama since 1940s. The great artist is no more today."

"He has also been a member of parliament. I am sure he has set an example for people in future," he added.

SSR became the first elected Member of Legislative Assembly among actors in India when he was elected to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly as a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) candidate from Theni constituency in 1962.
