Congress leader Vijay Bahuguna on Friday resigned as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand.
"According to direction of the party High Command, I have tendered my resignation to the Governor. I will continue to work for the people here," Bahuguna told media here after meeting Governor Aziz Qureshi.
Union Water Resources Minister Harish Rawat and Uttarakhand Food and Civil Supplies Minister Pritam Singh are the frontrunners for the coveted post.
Bahuguna's resignation comes after Congress President Sonia Gandhi held a meeting with senior party leaders in Delhi on Wednesday.
It is believed that the way Bahuguna handled the flash floods and the massive rescue and rehabilitation work in the State last year brought his leadership skills into question.
