Violence marred the third phase of election in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday after police baton charged supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who were protesting against booth capturing by the Samajwadi Party (SP) workers.
A total number of 12 seats went to polls in Uttar Pradesh, with 188 candidates in the fray.
BJP supporters came out in droves in Firozabad district and staged a sit-in protest.
BJP candidate, S.P. Singh Baghel, said that workers of the Samajwadi Party made attempts of bogus voting.
"When the voting began, the workers and leaders of the Samajwadi Party started booth capturing," Baghel said.
Demanding re-polling, BJP supporters entered into a scuffle with policemen who were trying to disperse them from the spot.
Inspector General, Agra zone, Ashutosh Pande, said that action would be taken against those responsible for inciting violence.
"Section 144 was imposed and around 800 to 1000 protesters had gathered. Police were trying to disperse the protesters. The police then baton charged the protesters who later ran away," Pande said.
