In a recent social study it was revealed that middle-aged 'baby boomers' rate "the number of friends they have across social media networks" as their key self-confidence indicator.

Some 29 per cent of Baby Boomers aged between 34 and 48, said virtual friends were most important to them and same percentage agreed on life experiences being more important, the Independent reported.

27 per cent of respondents from the age group 49 to 68 said that virtual friends and followers on sites such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter were most important than financial wealth, material possessions and a rich and varied social life, while only 21 per cent of them valued "the number of experiences they were exposed to.''

In the survey conducted by The Future Laboratory, overall 2,000 people by market researchers 'Opinium', social media network was the clear winner as a measure of personal value.
