West Bengal Transport Minister and Saradha scam accused Madan Mitra on Friday was remanded for judicial custody till January 30 by the Alipore Court.
"Madan Mitra was produced in the Alipore Court today. We applied for bail, we have cited the law books and after a prolonged hearing, he has been remanded for judicial custody till January 30," the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader's lawyer told the media.
Meanwhile, a petition was filed in the Calcutta High Court seeking removal of Madan Mitra from the post of state Transport Minister.
"I am asking before the court why and how Madan Mitra did his work in the state. How can he serve the state as a minister?" L. Bhaduri, the petitioner asked.
Another petitioner Anangjit Chatterjee said that Madan Mitra cannot continue in his job as a minister.
"We demand to the court the disqualification of his ministry... I have appealed that he cannot continue as a minster because he cannot do his duty while in jail," he said.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had arrested Mitra on December 12 in connection with the multi-crore Saradha scam.
