Transport officials in Washington have banned plans by an American free speech pressure group to put a controversial cartoon of Prophet Mohammad on the subway.

The transport authority in the American capital unanimously approved a decision to ban advertisements it described as issue-oriented, reports the BBC.

The American Freedom Defense Initiative wanted to display a cartoon, which won the first prize at an event in Texas, on the subway. Two gunmen were shot earlier this month by the police outside the Texas event that exhibited cartoons of the prophet.

AFDI founder Pamela Geller condemned the decision to ban the advert, dubbing it as an attack on free speech. She said on her website, Rewarding terror with submission is defeat, absolute and complete defeat.
