Australian former skipper Steve Waugh has defended his decision to axe the then teammate Shane Warne from the national squad for the final Test of a 1999 tour of the West Indies.

The 50-year-old said that it was a tough call for him to drop Warne, but the decision was made for the benefit of the team, News.com.au reported.

Insisting that being a captain was a hardest thing for him, Waugh said that he was already aware of the fact that he could not please everyone because of the tough decisions that comes with the job.

Earlier, Warne had branded Waugh as 'the most selfish player' he has ever played with.

Recalling the incident, Warne had said that he did not like the way in which Waugh told him that he was dropped for the last Test match.

Warne, who admitted that he did not like Waugh for many other reasons, insisted that he felt he was the scapegoat for his side's loss.
