Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka has joined his compatriot Roger Federer in an exit from the Italian Open following his third round loss at the ATP-WTA Rome Masters on Thursday, aggravated by back pain.

Germany's 15th seed Tommy Haas ended with seven aces to eight for Wawrinka, who could not hold onto leads throughout the two-hour contest, and beat him 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 and has now won both of his matches with the Monte Carlo champion.

According to Sport24, Wawrinka revealed that his problem started after playing a match in the chill two days earlier, although he dismissed any concerns over the issue and insisted that it should not mess his chances for the French Open starting in 10 days.

Canadian eighth seed Milos Raonic reached his first Rome quarter-final with a defeat of French 11th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 while Jeremy Chardy kept up his momentum by defeating Ivan Dodig 6-3, 6-2, the report added.
