Wayne Rooney has said that he intends to become the highest goal scorer for the Three Lions and Manchester United before his football career comes to an end.

The 28 year old English footballer's strike in last week's 1-0 defeat of Norway saw him overtake Michael Owen to become fourth on the all-time scoring list, the Daily Star reports.

With 41 international goals to his credit, the new Three Lions captain aims to surpass Charlton's 249 to become United's greatest ever goalscorer.

Rooney, who has 217 goals to his credit, says that it's in his sights and one day hopes to achieve his target.

He said that he would be a fool if he didn't look at Sir Bobby Charlton's record and feel capable of passing him, adding that he was confident of holding the two records one day.
