West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday demanded legal action against the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders, who allegedly tortured the state's Election Commissioner (EC) Susanta Upadhyaya and forced him to resign.

"Bengal EC was forced to resign and I have information that not only was he attacked by goons, but also was physically and mentally tortured. Legal action should be taken against all the TMC leaders and ministers who tortured Susanta Upadhyaya," BJP state President Rahul Sinha said while addressing the media.

Praising the former Bengal EC, Sinha said that Upadhyaya had showed the true face of TMC to the people.

"I salute the West Bengal election commissioner for not bowing down in front of TMC goons." he said.

Susanta Upadhyaya, on Tuesday tendered his resignation to West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi. His resignation came just a day after TMC leadership publically threatened him to announce the dates for counting votes to Civil bodies Election.

Earlier, the opposition parties had demanded the cancellation of elections to Bidhannagar and Asansol Municipal Corporation and certain other areas, which were held on October 3.

Alapan Bandopadhyay, New State Transport Secretary, has been appointed as the next Election Commissioner of Bengal.
