A company that is producing World Cup merchandise has reportedly suffered the ultimate gaffe by mistaking England defender Chris Smalling for US President Barack Obama on 2,000 mugs.

Ahead of the World Cup, an unnamed Dorset company was allotted the task of sourcing the images of each England player to use on mugs, along with coasters, mouse mats and much more.

According to The Mirror, all the merchandise then passed through proofing and was forwarded to Wholesale Clearance UK, who are trying to shift the stock.

However, when the mugs were unpacked and pulled out for closer inspection, the Manchester United defender's cup displayed Obama's head on it instead.

It is not clear as to who made the absolute blunder, although an apprentice at the Dorset company has been blamed.
