Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Aug 17 (ANI): Ace shuttler Jwala Gutta has defended the sad medal run of the Indian contingent in the Rio Olympics saying that they had prepared superbly but were just unlucky.

"Overall, we really worked hard for the Olympics, we trained a lot and gave our best but I think we were little unlucky," Jwala told ANI.

Following the early elimination of Saina Nehwal and women's doubles pair of Jwala and Ashwini Ponnappa, India have now pinned their dwindling hopes on shuttlers Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth, who will play his men's singles quarterfinal later in the day.

"It is good to have expectations as it motivates sportspersons but it is sports, you win some, you lose some. As sportspersons, we need to move on from here and try to give best in next tournament," the 32-year-old said while adding that she was planning to start playing mixed doubles.

Jwala and Ashwini, the country's premier doubles pair, crashed out of the prestigious quadrennial event after losing all three group stage matches.
