Dispelling the rumour that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has been asked to take over the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) row probe, Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi on Sunday said that his men are competent enough to investigate each and every case which they register.

Bassi, however, said that the Delhi Police is duty bound to inform the NIA.

"We have not said that the case should be handed over to the NIA, but when a case is registered under the Section 24 A, under the NIA Act, we have to send a report of the case to the NIA through the Central Government so that the NIA can decide whether they want to investigate the case or not, it's their discretion," Bassi said.

"As we have registered an FIR under Section 144 A, under the NIA Act, we are duty bound to inform them, which we did. We have not asked them to take or reject the case, it's their discretion. If NIA takes over, it's fine, otherwise, our investigation is on," he added.

Responding to a poser about updates into the JNU row inquiry, he said some arrests have been made, adding that more people would be taken into custody after proper identification.

When asked about the police investigation into terror links of arrested JNU Students' Union president Kanhaiya Kumar, Bassi said: "Our investigation is on. And if such a thing comes out, we will let you know."

Reports earlier suggested that the Delhi Police top brass was keen on transferring the case to the Special Cell or the National Investigation Agency since "links between the JNU students and terrorist Afzal Guru" need to be probed.

A status report on the JNU case has already been submitted to Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung.

Kanhaiya was arrested on Friday over a protest organized in the JNU campus on February 9 against the hanging of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.
