West Bengal: Cyclone Bulbul claims 7 lives

At least seven people have died and 4.65 lakh people were affected due to cyclone Bulbul in the state.

In a statement, West Bengal's Department of Disaster Management and Civil Defence said: "Seven persons have died and around 4.65 lakh people affected till now due to Bulbul cyclone."

"Five deaths have occurred in North 24 Parganas and one each in Purba Medinipur and South 24 Parganas. Five deaths have occurred due to tree falling and one each due to wall collapse and boat capsizing," added the statement.

The statement said: "The number of people affected is 4.65 lakh and 1.78 lakh people have been evacuated and about 60,000 houses are damaged."

 

"There are 471 relief camps and people are returning home from these camps. There are 94 boats deployed. There are 10 teams of NDRF, 6 teams of SDRF and 1,429 Disaster Management Group of the Kolkata Police and civil defence volunteers are working in the field," added the statement.

According to the statement, extensive damage to Sunderbans forests has been reported and the detailed assessment is being done.

Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said: "The deep depression over coastal Bangladesh and neighbourhood lay centered at 1730 hours IST of 10th about 170 km east-northeast of Sunderban National. To move east-northeastwards and weaken into a depression over coastal Bangladesh and neighbourhood during next 12 hours.
