Tripathi will hold additional duties until regular arrangements are made for the office.
Earlier in the day, Mizoram Governor Aziz Qureshi was relieved of his duties following his ongoing feud with the Centre.
"Aziz Qureshi shall cease to hold the office of the governor of Mizoram and appointed Keshari Nath Tripathi, governor of West Bengal, to discharge the functions of the governor of Mizoram", an official statement from the President's House said.
Qureshi, who was among the Governors appointed by the former UPA regime and was told by the then Home Secretary Anil Goswami to quit after the change in government, approached the Supreme Court against attempts to ease him out. He was then the Uttarakhand Governor.
Qureshi had in his petition claimed that after the NDA Government came to power, Goswami had called him on July 30 and asked him to tender his resignation and made it clear that he will be removed from office if he does not step down.
