White House lead man Jay Carney has resigned from the position of press secretary to the President of the US.

According to Fox News, Barack Obama interrupted Carney's daily press briefing to announce his departure, calling him one of his 'closest friends' and a trusted adviser.

The announcement came after Obama declared earlier in the day that he had accepted the resignation of Veteran Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki amid the health-care scandal.

The US President further revealed that Carney had plans to take the summer off before getting a new job, indicating that the press secretary role has been a 'strain' on his family.

He further added that he had chosen Josh Earnest, Carney's deputy as the new Press Secretary.

Carney said that he was yet to make any decisions on his next step, adding that he was excited about some of the possibilities that he has begun to explore.

He also ruled out rumors that he would serve as ambassador to Russia, saying his wife and two children wouldn't welcome such a move, the report added.
