Leaders attending the G20 summit in Brisbane and suburban areas would see the mercury climb to 40 degrees on Sunday according to forecast as a heatwave makes its way to eastern Australia.

The Bureau of meteorology said that Brisbane's record for the month goes back to November, 2013 making any new peak a once in a century event.

Brisban's maximum temperature peaked on Saturday at 32.2 degrees while other inland centres were much warmer.

Amberlay's temperature soared to 43 degrees where the U.S. President Barack Obama landed earlier in the day.

Alice Springs Airport's temperature recorded a temperature of 44.6 degrees, said the bureau.
