At least 10 people were killed after wildfires driven by powerful winds tore through Northern California on Monday, forcing evacuations and destroying homes in their path.

More than 100 people were being treated at Napa and Sonoma-area hospitals for fire-related injuries or health issues including burns, smoke inhalation and shortness of breath, the CNN reported.

According to the report, the fire has led to the destruction of an estimated number of 1,500 structures and has burned down 57,000 acres in eight counties.

Governor Jerry Brown has declared an emergency in eight counties, including Napa and Sonoma in the heart of wine country.

The Department of Homeland Security has said that the Federal Emergency Management Agency immediately agreed to the state's request for federal funds to help fight many of the fires.
