Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday recalled the role played by Malay Indians in the Indian National Army and announced to name a cultural centre in Kuala Lumpur after Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
"I will name our cultural centre here after Subhas Chandra Bose. Independent India owes a debt of gratitude to Malaya-Indians. Thousands of your forefathers came forward to join Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and Indian National Army," Prime Minister Modi said.
Praising Mahatma Gandhi in his speech addressed to the Indian diaspora, Prime Minister Modi said, "We share colonial history. The glory of India's freedom struggle was written in part by Malaya Indians. Gandhiji did not visit Malaysia but he touched your hearts. And you came together to build a memorial in his name."
"There are few things that can be as moving as these. A homage in silence expressed in action and built into living memorial. And it is my privilege that we will install Gandhiji's bust at Gandhi Memorial hall," he added.
