Defending champion and third seed Andy Murray started his title defence by beating Belgian David Goffin 6-1, 6-4, 7-5.
The Briton, who had appointed former women's world number one Amelie Mauresmo as his new coach before the tournament began, stuck eight aces and 28 winners.
Murray will now face Slovenia's Blaz Rola.
