The Congress Party on Friday said that the writers and poets were returning their Sahitya Academi awards in their protest against the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) secret agenda of 'communal division'.

Congress spokesperson P.C. Chacko alleged that disrupting communal harmony in the country was a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's (RSS) 'gameplan'.

"The intellectuals of the society like writers and authors returned their awards because the country is facing very very severe situation. Communal division of society is taking place. Communal division is the secret agenda of the BJP. All this is gameplan of the RSS. Communal harmony is at risk in India today. This is the reason why intellectuals of the society, writers and authors are returning their awards," he told ANI.

"The Sahitya Akademi today condemned the killing of writers and urged those who had returned their awards in protest to take them back," he added.

Earlier, the writers took part in a peaceful march to protest against increasing intolerance in the country.

They gathered at the Shri Ram Centre and marched towards the Sahitya Akademi.
