Yemen's southern port city of Aden has been 'liberated' from Shia Houthi rebel forces, the country's exiled vice president has declared.

Khaled Bahah, who is in Saudi Arabia, said that his government would work to restore life and basic services in the city that has seen intense fighting between rebels and troops loyal to President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi, backed by Saudi-led airstrikes, in recent months, reported the BBC.

President Hadi's government was forced to flee from its stronghold of Aden in March after Houthis advanced across the provincial capital.

A major offensive to drive rebels out of Aden was launched earlier this week.
