Yemen's President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi has reportedly fled his palace in Aden as Shia Houthi rebels stormed the city.
However, government officials denied reports that Hadi had fled the country and said that he remained in Aden, reported the BBC.
The U.S. State Department said that it was in touch with Hadi earlier in the day and that he was no longer at the compound but added that it could not confirm any "additional details" about his whereabouts.
The report said that gunfire was heard around the city centre and security forces allied to the Houthis took control of the international airport.
State television, which is controlled by the rebels, announced a bounty of 93,000 dollars for anyone who captured the "fugitive" president.
The rebels have made stunning gains since taking control of a key airbase only 60km from Aden on Wednesday morning.
Meanwhile, Yemeni Foreign Minister Riad Yassin urged Arab nations to launch an urgent military intervention.
