Australia joined the International Yoga Day celebrations with fervor on Tuesday as several enthusiasts were seen practicing various 'asanas' at the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The event in Sydney was organized by the Hindu Council of Australia in collaboration with BridgeClimb.

Yoga and meditation sessions were also organised across major Australian cities, including Canberra and Melbourne, with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull hailing yoga as one of India's gifts to the world.

The celebrations for the second International Day for Yoga were organized across the globe including the UN headquarters in New York.

Several striking images of complex yoga postures, including Surya Namaskar, illuminated the United Nations Headquarters.

The United Nations General Assembly declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga on December 11, 2014, after a call from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address to UN General Assembly on September 27 that year.
