Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington believes that it is important for young men to have a father figure in their life.

According to Contactmusic, the 62-year-old actor has cited their upbringing and lack of father figures as the main reasons why so many young men spend time in prison.

Washington, who will be next seen as an idealistic defence attorney in upcoming movie 'Roman J. Israel, Esq', said, "It starts at home."

The 'Fences' star argued, it is imperative young men have positive male influences in their lives if they are to remain on the right path.

"It starts with how you raise your children. If a young man doesn't have a father figure, he'll go find a father figure. So you know I can't blame the system. It's unfortunate that we make such easy work for them," noted Washington.

In an earlier interview, the actor touched upon some of his own experiences growing up.

"I grew up with guys who did decades (in prison) and it had as much to do with their fathers not being in their lives as it did to do with any system," shared Washington.

On the professional front, Denzel Washington will be seen in Dan Gilroy's 'Roman J. Israel, Esq.' alongside Colin Farrell and Carmen Ejogo.

The flick is currently playing in U.S. cinemas.
