American golfer Zach Johnson has said that he was humbled to be Open champion after winning a three-man play-off on a thrilling final day at St Andrews.

The 39-year-old, who claimed his second major triumph of his career, said that he was honoured to be Open champion, adding that he was humbled to see his name etched on the historic Claret Jug along with some of golf's most famous names, the BBC reported.

Johnson triumphed at the Old Course by finishing a shot ahead of South African Louis Oosthuizen and three above Australian Marc Leishman over four extra holes.

An additional four-hole play-off was required to decide the winner after all three finished at 15- under 273 on Monday.

Johnson insisted that 'patience' and 'perseverance' were the key factors behind his success, and said that he couldn't have play any better than he did at the Old Course.
