In the 2013 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) stringent small overlap front crash, the 2013 Honda Civic Sedan and Coupe are the only small cars to earn the top ratings of GOOD. Moreover, the vehicles are also the only small cars to grab both the highest possible rating of TOP SAFETY PICK+ from the IIHS and the top 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score in the NHTSA's New Car Assessment Program (NCAP).
"Honda continues to lead the industry in crash test performance, and after watching the videos, I think every compact car shopper should view the results of the new IIHS small overlap front crash tests before deciding on their next car," said Mike Accavitti, senior vice president of auto operations at American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "For customers looking to buy a compact car that achieves an overall GOOD rating in the IIHS small overlap frontal test, Civic is currently the only choice."
The Civic Sedan is built on Honda's next generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure, allowing the small car to become the first to earn a TOP SAFETY PICK+ crash safety rating, and the first till date to earn the highest rating of GOOD in the IIHS' new small overlap front crash test. This aggressive test is designed to simulate what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object such as a tree or utility pole at high speed. The reinforced ACE body structure found on the 2013 Civic further enhances the absorption of frontal crash energy, through a wider range of these offset and oblique collision scenarios.
Additional standard safety equipment on all Civic models include Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with traction control; an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS); side curtain airbags; dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags; and driver and front passenger side airbags.
