Last month German car maker Volkswagen released a teaser image for its next generation Passat and now the manufacturer has officially took the wraps off the 2015 model. The new Passat looks more edgy and sportier than its predecessor, albeit with flatter profile aimed at providing it with added visual length.

The eighth generation Passat is based on Volkswagen’s highly flexible MQB platform structure, already used by Skoda Octavia and new Audi A3. This new platform uses a combination of both high strength and hot form steel which helps in keeping it lighter in weight. Considering the weight Passat has shed, the sedan will now be more fuel-efficient. Furthermore, this new model will be the first Passat to be also offered with a plug-in hybrid version, with an expected combined range of around 900 kilometres.

“The new Passat offers more value for money, because it transfers technologies and features into the mid-range segment, which are normally limited to up-market cars,” said Winterkorn. “It is designed to be a premium car without premium cost and it is designed to be eye-catching without envy.”

The 2015 eighth-generation Passat comes with LED head and tail lamps, a TT-derived Active Info display (a fully digital instrument cluster), extendible head-up display as well as systems such as an app-based Rear Seat Entertainment for tablet computers, Front Assist and City Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring. Three new innovation- Emergency Assist (vehicle stops in emergency), Trailer Assist (assisted maneuvering with a trailer) and Traffic Jam Assist, will also be making their debuts with the new Passat.

With no official word on the engines, we expect it to arrive with two petrol and two diesel engines. The petrol variants might get 1.4-litre TSI and 1.8-litre TSI under its hoods. While the diesel variants will most likely get the 1.6-litre TDI and the 2.0-litre TDI for the higher trims.
