It has been an interesting April for the Indian automotive industry. We'll focus on segment wise sales in this article. You can read our sales report for the top manufacturers in the country as well.
Before we dive into specific segments, let us take a look at who topped the charts.
The Top Ten!
The Top Tens | ||
1 | Alto | 16583 |
2 | Swift | 15661 |
3 | Wagon R | 15323 |
4 | Dzire | 13256 |
5 | i20 Elite | 11147 |
6 | i10 Grand | 9840 |
7 | KWID | 9795 |
8 | Baleno | 9562 |
9 | CELERIO | 8548 |
10 | Omni | 8356 |
It is hardly a surprise that seven out of the top ten are Maruti Suzuki products. The top five remain unchanged from the previous month. Interestingly, the Creta has bowed out of the list and is replaced by the Baleno.
How did the new-comers do?
Good question.
More From This Section
The New Comers | ||
1 | Vitara Brezza | 7832 |
2 | Tata Tiago | 3022 |
3 | Honda BRV | 567 |
4 | Ford Endeavour | 560 |
5 | Skoda Superb | 107 |
Unsurprisingly, the Brezza is selling by the bucket loads. The thirty-lakh rupee barges, read, the Superb and the Endeavour are clocking in decent numbers as well. The BR-V was launched on May 5 — the 567 units you see are dispatches to the dealers. The Tiago topped the charts for Tata, selling around three thousand units.
What about the hatchbacks?
A & B1 Segment | ||
1 | Alto | 16583 |
2 | Wagon R | 15323 |
3 | KWID | 9795 |
4 | CELERIO | 8548 |
5 | Eon | 5417 |
B2 Segment | ||
1 | Swift | 15661 |
2 | i20 Elite | 11147 |
3 | i10 Grand | 9840 |
4 | Baleno | 9562 |
5 | KUV 100 | 5097 |
The A, B1 and B2 segments are obviously the bread-butter segments for most manufacturers in the country. The top-five across categories remain unchanged yet again. Nexa's poster boy, the Baleno sold nearly three thousand units over the previous month's tally. No wonder the waiting periods are ridiculously long!
And the ones with a boot?
Compact Sedans | ||
1 | Swift Dzire | 13256 |
2 | Xcent | 4200 |
3 | Amaze | 2639 |
4 | Zest | 1419 |
5 | Figo Aspire | 1156 |
Sedans | ||
1 | City | 5793 |
2 | Ciaz | 5702 |
3 | Verna | 2050 |
4 | Vento | 973 |
5 | Rapid | 621 |
6 | Linea | 67 |
The ones with the little boots (read: sub 4-metre sedans) did just fine. Usual fare, where the Dzire outsold everyone else put together. Talk about wiping the floor clean with your opponents! On the big boot end, the City and the Ciaz still spar for the top spot. The Honda has edged past the Maruti, this time around, but only just.
What about the SUVs?
Sub 4-meter SUVs | ||
1 | Vitara Brezza | 7832 |
2 | Ecosport | 3789 |
3 | TUV 300 | 1928 |
4 | NuvoSport | 553 |
The ones under 4-metres in length are in a league of their own. The new kid on the block, the Vitara Brezza trumps the Ford Ecosport two months in a row. With rumours ripe of a possible Brezza automatic, we expect this number to only grow bigger. Let's not forget, the petrol is on its way too.
SUVs | ||
1 | Creta | 7900 |
2 | Scorpio | 4328 |
3 | XUV 500 | 2821 |
4 | Duster | 2128 |
5 | BRV | 567 |
6 | Terrano | 463 |
The mid-size SUV turf is Creta territory. This month, the Hyundai outsold the Duster, Terrano and the Scorpio put together! Clearly it isn't losing steam anytime soon. Mahindra's XUV500 clocked a decent number as well.
With more launches scheduled, we expect sales to gather steam over the coming months. Everything from an entry-level hatchback such as the Datsun redi-GO to a full-blown luxury SUV such as the Mercedes-Benz GLS is due for launch. Anything on the list that surprises you? Think a particular car could have clocked better numbers? Let us know!
