Tata-owned Jaguar Land Rover has made an official announcement to construct a new vehicle plant in Slovakia, following several months of negotiations with the local authorities. The plant will be located in the western city of Nitra and the operations would kick start in 2018.

Employing around 2,800 people directly, an investment of USD1.5 billion will be spent on the plant. The plant will have a capacity of 1,50,000 units in the intial phase but the British carmaker sees this reaching 3,00,000 eventually. Currently JLR builds vehicles in Brazil, China, India and, of course, the United Kingdom.

Dr Ralf Speth, Chief Executive Officer, Jaguar Land Rover commented, "Jaguar Land Rover is delighted today to welcome Slovakia into our family. The new factory will complement our existing facilities in the UK, China, India and Brazil and marks the next step in the company's strategy to become a truly global business.”

Jaguar Land Rover has just stated that the plant will build a “range of all-new aluminium” vehicles and no specific details on what vehicles will be built at the plant was revealed. Though the 2018-expected members of the next-generation Land Rover Defender family is what we expect from there.

Robert Fico, Prime Minister, Slovakia, said, "We are glad that Jaguar Land Rover has chosen Slovakia for its new world-class manufacturing facility. This decision shows that, with a stable and solid business environment, Slovakia is an attractive place for investors. And the marriage of Slovak craftsmanship and British engineering holds great promise."
