Mahindra, after suffering a setback from the Delhi diesel ban, has now resorted to the electric segment of the auto world. After successfully running e2o, giving a good performance in the Formula E event and Anand Mahindra becoming a member of Formula E sustainability committee, Mahindra feels confident in introducing more electric vehicles in the country. Introduced in the Auto Expo 2012, the electric Verito could soon hit the roads.
If reports are to be believed, Mahindra will be launching the electric Verito in February 2016. It could be powered by the same drivetrain employed in the Mahindra e2o which gives it a claimed top speed of 85 km/h and a range of 80 km in a 7-hour full charge. The car also features hill-hold and stand-still pick up to assist the driver. It was also featured in the 2014 Auto Expo and will be the second all-electric product from Mahindra. Electric Verito will also benefit from the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric vehicles) scheme enabling subsidies on the car.
On June 5, 2015, the car was driven from India Gate to Terminal 3 of the IGI Airport in New Delhi as a part of a green rally drive called ‘The FAME India Eco Drive’. This was an initiative of the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, Government of India in association with Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), SMEV and Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL). Joining the E-Verito were 10 e2os and an electric Maxximo.
Arvind Mathew, Chief Executive of Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles said, “We are exploring similar models in other parts of the country.” He added “If we can scale to 40,000 cars, prices will drop.”
