To circumvent the ban imposed on diesel cars, which feature powerplants with more than 2000cc of displacement, Mahindra has launched 1.99-litre iterations of its XUV500 and Scorpio SUVs. The ban is also the reason why these cars are only exclusively available in New Delhi markets. The 1.99-litre XUV500 has been launched at Rs. 11.58 lakh (Ex-showroom, New Delhi) with the top-of-the-range model being priced at Rs. 15.51 lakh. Mahindra Scorpio with the same powerplant, in a different state of tune features a price tag of Rs. 9.67 lakh (Ex-showroom, New Delhi) and the top-end trim features a price tag of Rs. 12.75 lakh.
Supreme Court recently issued this ban on diesel cars because of the increasing pollution crisis that is plaguing the nation’s capital. The ban is exclusive to Delhi and seeing how it is a vital market for the automaker, Mahindra instantaneously rolled out its tweaked power plants and outsourced mapping of the same. There are no indications as to whether or not these models will be offered in other parts of the country.
The new 1.99-litre powerplant produces 120bhp of power output and 280Nm of peak torque in the Scorpio and has been tuned to belt-out 140bhp and 320Nm of torque in the XUV500. Mahindra has managed to keep the power figures in close vicinity of the higher displacement unit, hence ensuring that any compromise on the performance front is minimalistic. These powerplants are downsized iterations of the company’s 2.2-litre mHawk unit and produces the similar power outputs as compared to its larger sibling.

The powerplants will come mated to manual transmission options, i.e. a 6-speed gearbox for the XUV500 and a 5-speed unit for Scorpio. Coming to the drive type, both of these cars will only be offered in 2WD drive and not 4X4 or AWD.
