Volkswagen has unveiled the price of their 'Made for India' Volkswagen Ameo compact sedan. With prices starting from Rs 5.24 lakh for the base model to Rs 7.05 lakh for the top-of-the-line Highline variant, the Ameo undercuts most of its competition like the Honda Amaze and the Hyundai Xcent. What is more surprising is that the Ameo is priced nearly identical to the highest selling car in the segment, the Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire. At this price, the Volkswagen Ameo is one of the best value for money cars you can buy in India today. The mid range Comfortline is priced at Rs 5.99 lakh.

The Ameo will currently only be available with a petrol engine with the diesel variants following soon. The 1.2-litre petrol engine is a 3-cylinder motor that makes 75PS of peak power and 110Nm of peak torque. The new Ameo also features several first-in-class features like cruise control and Apple CarPlay. The Ameo will also come with safety features like ABS and airbags as standard across all variants. Other first-in-class features include rain sensing wipers, cornering lights and anti-pinch windows both at the front and the rear.

The diesel variants that will follow soon will have a 1.5-litre diesel will get 90PS of peak power and 230Nm of peak torque mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 7-speed automatic DSG gearbox. We expect the diesel variants to start around the Rs 6.5 lakh range with the top of the line manual and automatic priced around Rs 8.5 lakh and Rs 9.5 lakh respectively. What is interesting to note though is that the petrol powered Ameo is currently priced cheaper than the Polo hatchback. Considering the fact that these are introductory prices, either expect the prices of the Ameo to go up in the next few months or the prices of the Polo to be slashed in the coming weeks.
