It goes without saying that Volkswagen India is banking heavily on the Ameo to improve its fortunes in our sub-continent. The German automaker’s plant in Chakan, Pune (Maharashtra) rolled out around 1.23 lakh cars in 2015. With the launch of the Ameo, Volkswagen India’s president and managing director Andreas Lauermann is hoping to see that number go up by 15%.

The sub 4-metre sedan will rival the likes of the segment leading Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire along with the Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent, Tata Zest and Ford Figo Aspire. Bookings for the compact sedan will open tomorrow and the company will also flag-off a road show that will make its way to 17 cities from May 12 to July 2, 2016. The event will spread awareness about the car and interested buyers will also be able to access information on the Ameo through a mobile app or Volkswagen’s official website.

An earlier report indicates that the car may be launched only with a petrol motor at first. However, engine options on the Ameo will include a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder MPI petrol engine mated with a 5-speed manual gearbox and an updated 1.5-litre TDi diesel engine, matched with either a 5-speed manual or a 7-speed direct shift automatic gearbox (DSG). The Ameo comes equipped with dual airbags and ABS as standard while the feature list will include niceties like cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, static cornering lights, a reversing camera, parking sensors and a touchscreen infotainment system.

How do you think Volkswagen should price the Ameo? Let us know through the comments!
