Australian shares ended higher for fifth straight session on Tuesday, 09 January 2018, as gains in shares of miners and energy companies were more than offset by weakness in the retail and healthcare sectors. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index rose 0.1% to 6,135.8 points. Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Sydney Stock Exchange by 674 to 551 and 403 ended unchanged. The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was down 3.65% to 9.467.
