Benchmarks trade near day's low; gold firms up

Key domestic barometers were trading near the day's low in mid-afternoon trade amid extensive selling pressure. The Nifty 50 traded near 11,250 level. The illness derived from the novel coronavirus, SARS-COV-2, which originated in China, is starting to affect global trade and travel and dent confidence about earnings and economic growth.

At 14:28 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, tumbled 1280.91 points or 3.22% at 38,464.75. The Nifty 50 index was down 380.05 points or 3.27% at 11,253.25.

Selling was wide spread. The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index was down 2.95% while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index was down 3.16%.

 

Sellers outpaced buyers. On the BSE, 355 shares rose and 1996 shares fell. A total of 134 shares were unchanged. In Nifty 50 index, 1 stock advanced while 49 stocks declined.

Buzzing Index:

The Nifty Realty index fell 3.46% to 280.25, underperforming the benchmark Nifty. The index has fallen 7.37% in the past three sessions.

Sunteck Realty (down 8.27%), Prestige Estates Projects (down 7.73%), Indiabulls Real Estate (down 5%), Peninsula Land (down 4.9%), Unitech (down 4.7%), Parsvnath Developers (down 4.69%), Anant Raj (down 4.41%), Sobha (down 4.28%), DLF (down 4.1%), Housing Development and Infrastructure (HDIL) (down 3.32%), Godrej Properties (down 2.79%), Phoenix Mills (down 2.45%), Mahindra Lifespace Developers (down 2.44%) and Omaxe (down 1.15%) declined.

Numbers to Track:

In the foreign exchange market, the rupee depreciated against the dollar. The partially convertible rupee was trading at 72.0675, compared with its previous closing low of 71.61.

The yield on 10-year benchmark federal paper rose to 6.390% at 14:24 IST compared with 6.378% in the previous trading session.

In the commodities market, Brent crude for April 2020 settlement was down $1.16 to $51.02 a barrel. The contract fell $1.25 or 2.34% to settle at $52.18 a barrel in the previous trading session.

MCX Gold futures for 3 April 2020 settlement rose 0.25% to Rs 42,490 as investors rushed to safe haven counters following a rapid spread of coronavirus cases throughout the world.
