A bout of volatility was witnessed as key benchmark indices regained positive zone soon after slipping into the red in afternoon trade. Gains for benchmark indices were small. Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 656.37 crore yesterday, 17 November 2014, as per provisional data. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley yesterday, 17 November 2014, said that he is in touch with various state governments and most of the contentious issues on the implementation of the Goods and Service Tax (GST) have already been resolved. Jaitley said that the targets fixed for disinvestment in the current financial year are quite ambitious one but he hopes to achieve that or reach near the same.

In overseas markets, Japanese stocks led gains in Asian markets following reports that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will today, 18 November 2014, announce plans to put off a sales-tax increase and call a snap election after data yesterday, 17 November 2014, showed the Japanese economy entered recession.

At 13:15 IST, the S&P BSE Sensex was up 35.61 points or 0.13% at 28,213.49. The index jumped 104.97 points at the day's high of 28,282.85 in morning trade, a record high for the index. The index fell 7.82 points at the day's low of 28,170.06 in afternoon trade.
The CNX Nifty was up 9.20 points or 0.11% at 8,439.95. The index hit a high of 8,454.50 in intraday trade, a record high for the index. The index hit a low of 8,422.55 in intraday trade.
The market breadth indicating the overall health of the market was positive. On BSE, 1,638 shares gained and 1,202 shares fell. A total of 106 shares were unchanged.
The BSE Mid-Cap index was up 52.26 points or 0.51% at 10,299.96. The BSE Small-Cap index was up 91.97 points or 0.81% at 11,429.93. Both these indices outperformed the Sensex.
Capital goods stocks edged higher. Siemens (up 1.77%), Crompton Greaves (up 1.03%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (up 0.96%), L&T (up 0.76%), Alstom T&D India (up 1.04%), and Thermax (up 0.49%) gained.
Punj Lloyd surged 4.97% at Rs 40.15 after the company said it has secured EPC highway contract worth Rs 666 crore from the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways for 90.586 kilometers of the Asian Highway network. The company made the announcement during market hours today, 18 November 2014.

Housing Development Finance Corporation (down 1.56%) and Bajaj Finserv (down 0.54%) declined.
The Winter Session of Parliament, during which the Insurance Bill is likely to be taken up for discussion and passage, will begin on 24 November 2014. The Insurance Bill proposes to hike the foreign direct investment (FDI) limit in the insurance sector to 49% from 26%.
PSU OMCs declined. HPCL (down 0.32%), Indian Oil Corporation (down 0.55%) and BPCL (down 0.03%) edged lower.
In the foreign exchange market, the rupee was currently almost unchanged against the dollar. The partially convertible rupee was hovering at 61.7425, compared with its close of 61.74 during the previous trading session.

Jaitley said he will apprise the Empowered Committee of State Finance Ministers' about the draft Constitution Amendment Bill on GST before introducing the same in parliament. Jaitley said that the targets fixed for disinvestment in the current financial year are quite ambitious one but he hopes to achieve that or reach near the same. He said that road shows in this regard are being held in many parts of the world.
The Finance Minister said that inflation, especially food inflation has moderated in last few months and global fuel prices have also come down. Therefore, if RBI which is highly professional organization in its wisdom decides to bring down the cost of capital, it will give a good fillip to the Indian economy, Jaitley said.
