CPI inflation moderates to four-month low of 10.4% in March 2013

All India General (all groups) Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation eased to a four-month low of 10.4% in March 2013 from 10.9% in February 2013. The corresponding inflation rates (provisional) for rural and urban areas are 10.33% and 10.38% respectively. Inflation rates (final) for rural, urban and combined for February 2013 are 11.01 %, 10.84 % and 10.91% respectively.

The moderation in CPI inflation in March 2013 has been mainly driven by 'Food, Beverages and Tobacco' inflation to 12.3% in March 2013 from 13.4% in February 2013. Within the group, the inflation for vegetables dipped 12.2% from 21.2%, while that for oils and fats also fell to 11.7% in March 2013 from 14.6% in February 2013.

 

The inflation for 'Fuel and Light' group also eased to 8.3% in March 2013 from 8.7% in February 2013 contributing to decline in CPI inflation for March 2013. The inflation for 'Housing' was steady at 10.5% in March 2013, while that for 'Miscellaneous' group rose slightly to 7.4% in March 2013 from 7.2% in February 2013.

The overall inflation for FY2013 was nearly steady at 10.2% compared to 10.3% in FY2012. Nearly 60% of the overall CPI inflation for FY2013 was contributed by 'Food, Beverages and Tobacco' group showing inflation of 11.8% for FY2013.
