CPI inflation rises for fifth straight month to 5.61% in December 2015

Core inflation rises to 4.5%, food inflation continued to rise to 6.3% in December 2015

The all-India general CPI inflation inched up to 5.61% in December 2015 (new base 2012=100), while recording rise for fifth straight month. the CPI inflation had stood at 5.41% in November 2015. The corresponding provisional inflation rate for rural area was 6.32% and urban area 4.73% in December 2015 as against 5.95% and 4.71% in November 2015. The core CPI inflation rose to 4.5% in December 2015 from 4.2% in November 2015. The cumulative CPI inflation eased to 4.2% in April-December 2015 compared with 6% in April-December 2014.

Among the CPI components, inflation of food and beverages increased to 6.3% in December 2015 from 6.1% in November 2015 contributing to the rise in CPI inflation. Within the food items, the inflation moved up for vegetables to 4.6%, pulses & products 45.9%, cereals & products 2.1%, spices 10.8%, meat & fish 6.6% and oils & fats 7.1%. On the other hand, inflation of fruits eased to 0.6% in December 2015.

 

The inflation for housing increased to 5.1%, while that for miscellaneous items moved up to 4% in December 2015. Within the miscellaneous items, the inflation for transport & communication rose to 1.3%, while eased for personal care to 3.6% and education to 5.6% in December 2015.

The inflation for clothing and footwear declined to 5.7% in December 2015, while the CPI inflation of fuel and light rose to 5.4% in December 2015.
