Eight core infrastructure growth eases to 2.3% in May 2013

The eight core industries having a combined weight of 37.90% in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) has shown a growth of 2.3% in May 2013 exhibiting moderation in growth from 2.4% in April 2013 and 7.2 % in May 2012. The decline in the growth rate in May 2013 was mainly on account of negative growth witnessed in the production of Coal, Crude Oil, Natural Gas and Fertilizers.

Coal production (weight: 4.38%) registered a negative growth of (-) 3.3% in May 2013 compared to its growth at 9.6% in May 2012. However, cumulative growth during April to May 2013-14 was (-) 0.1% as compared to 7.8% during April to May 2012-13.

 

Crude Oil production (weight: 5.22%) registered a negative growth of (-) 2.4% in May 2013 as compared to 0.5% growth in May 2012. Cumulative growth of Crude Oil production during April to May 2013-14 was negative at (-) 1.8% compared to (-) 0.4% during April to May 2012-13.

The growth rate of Natural Gas production (weight: 1.71%) was negative both in May 2013 at (-) 18.7% and in May 2012 at (-) 10.7%. Cumulative growth of Natural Gas production during April to May 2013-14 was also negative at (-) 18.1% compared to (-) 11.0% during April to May 2012-13.

Petroleum refinery production (weight: 5.94%) grew at 5.0% in May 2013 compared to 23.4% in May 2012. Cumulative growth of Petroleum refinery production during April to May 2013-14 was 5.3% as compared to 22.1% during April to May 2012-13.

Fertilizer production (weight: 1.25%) registered a growth of (-) 2.0% in May 2013 compared to (-) 15.1% in May 2012. Cumulative growth of Fertilizer production during April to May 2013-14 was (-) 2.2% as compared to (-) 12.4% during April to May 2012-13.

Steel production (weight: 6.68%) had a growth rate of 4.1% in May 2013 against 3.8% in May 2012. Cumulative growth of Steel production was 3.0 % both during April to May 2013-14 and during April to May 2012-13.

Cement production (weight: 2.41%) registered a growth of 3.0% in May 2013 against 15.4% growth in May 2012. Cumulative growth of Cement Production during April to May 2013-14 was 5.6 % as compared to 13.9% during April to May 2012-13.

Electricity generation (weight: 10.32%) registered a 6.2% growth in May 2013 compared to 5.9% growth in May 2012. Cumulative growth of Electricity generation during April to May 2013-14 was 4.9 % as compared to 5.6% during April to May 2012-13.
