Energy stocks were trading in the positive zone, with the S&P BSE Energy index rising 72 points or 1.57% at 4665.57 at 09:47 IST.
Among the components of the S&P BSE Energy index, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (up 4.83%), Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (up 4.34%),Mangalore Refinery And Petrochemicals Ltd (up 2.78%),Confidence Petroleum India Ltd (up 2.53%),Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd (up 2.38%), were the top gainers. Among the other gainers were Aegis Logistics Ltd (up 2.2%), Alphageo (India) Ltd (up 2.11%), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (up 1.84%), Oil & Natural Gas Corpn Ltd (up 1.83%), and Reliance Industries Ltd (up 1.41%).
On the other hand, Goa Carbon Ltd (down 4.99%), Aban Offshore Ltd (down 4.63%), and Gujarat Gas Ltd (down 1.11%) moved lower.
At 09:47 IST, the S&P BSE Sensex was up 385.67 or 1% at 38979.19.
The Nifty 50 index was up 118.15 points or 1.03% at 11558.35.
The S&P BSE Small-Cap index was up 60.34 points or 0.45% at 13444.11.
The S&P BSE 150 Midcap Index index was up 26.06 points or 0.58% at 4509.39.
On BSE,1013 shares were trading in green, 455 were trading in red and 51 were unchanged.
